Several branches of Uncle Giuseppe’s stores on Long Island provide shopping for food in an atmosphere suffused with a lively Italian ambiance.

RESTAURANTS

Whether via anecdotal observation or from more objective published surveys, Italian restaurants reign as the most popular eating places on Long Island, a phenomenon due in part to the large base of the Italian ethnic cohort that resides in Nassau and Suffolk but also because of the cuisine’s popularity among the general population. Pop artist and Long Islander Billy Joel captured the pervasiveness of Italian restaurants in his ballad “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant,” composed in 1977 and said to have been inspired in Christiano’s Restaurant in Syosset when a waiter serving him asked, “A bottle of white, a bottle of red/Perhaps a bottle of rosé instead?”—one of the ballad’s most memorable lines. Although no official count of the number of Italian restaurants that make Long Island their home exists, there must be hundreds, ranging from small, family-run establishments that were founded in ethnic neighborhoods of an earlier era to opulent, stand-alone operations in prestigious locations. Indeed, every Long Islander has his or her favorite Italian restaurant. In Massapequa, it likely would be the Zagat-rated excellent Il Classico, where master chef and owner Eddie Maiorini offers a tasteful dining experience that combines Old World taste and charm with New World sophistication while in Amityville, the choice likely would be Bellissimo Ristorante Italiano, owned and operated by the Guella family and whose menu reflects traditional Italian cuisine with both Tuscan and Sicilian influence. In Rockville Centre, Dodici gets the nod while Gemelli in Babylon is a favorite.
